The island of Jura is in the Inner Hebrides, an Scottish island group. Less than 200 people live all year round on the island which has three main hils, the so-called Paps of Jura, it is declared as a National Scenic Area. The main settlement is Craighouse on the east coast. You can reach Jura by car ferry from Islay and by passenger ferry from the Scottish mainland. The name Jura means ‘deer island’ in old Norse, there are between 5-6000 Red Deer living on the island. Other wildlife includes seals, birds of prey and little predators like stoats. Other attractions are Jura House with its exotic garden and the only whisky distillery in Craighouse. Swimming is possible, but cold in the sea and has to be approached with caution.
Jura has only one hotel but there are several bed and breakfast and rental cottages to choose from. Famous vistors the Scottish Isle of Jura included George Orwell who finished his novel ‘1984’ here and KLF (Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty) that burned in 1994 £1 million in banknotes on Jura Scotland.
